The influenza virus has been around for thousands of years. There are three main types of the virus: A, B, and C. Type A is the most dangerous and is responsible for the large-scale pandemics (大流行) that occur several times each century.

In recent months, many areas in North China are suffering from influenza, but health officials insist that the number of cases is not as high as reported. In Tianjin, doctors write about 4,000 prescriptions a day; the waiting time to see a doctor is at least two hours. And doctors from Shenyang said the number of patients seeking medical treatment there for upper respiratory (上呼吸道) diseases had increased by 30 percent since December.

Flu medicine is expensive, but that has not curbed demand. More than 100 boxes of Tamiflu, a common anti-flu medicine costing 200 yuan each, were sold each day in a single hospital in Beijing. Health experts suggest that people should get vaccinated (接种疫苗) to prevent the flu. They also advise that people should wash their hands frequently and avoid crowded places if they show symptoms.
