Part I Reading Comprehension (35 minutes, 40 points)
Directions:There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choies marked A), B), C) and D). After you read a passage, you should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.
Passage One
Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.
A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times. A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night and Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. This is why writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent co-operaton and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.
A fire drill is not an idle exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run. Last week’s drill was a particularly severe test of your willingness to cooperate, and I am proud to report that every member of staff responded magnificently. The fire alarm sounded at 2:15 a.m., and within three minutes, all employees had left the building and gathered at the designated assembly point in the car park. The head of each department checked the number of people in their group, and the fire wardens confirmed that no one was left inside.
The weather was appalling—heavy rain, thunder, and lightning—but not a single person complained or tried to avoid the drill. Instead, everyone followed the emergency procedures calmly and efficiently. This kind of discipline and commitment is exactly what we need to ensure the safety of all staff in the event of a real fire.
I would also like to thank the fire wardens for their quick response and clear instructions. Their professionalism helped to make the drill run smoothly, even in such difficult conditions.
Please remember that fire drills are a legal requirement and a vital part of our safety protocol. They may be inconvenient, but they are essential. Your cooperation last week was a perfect example of how seriously we take safety at this company.
Thank you again for your understanding and support.
Sincerely,
John Smith
Safety Manager

Passage Two
Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.
The rise of the internet has changed the way we communicate, work, and learn. It has also transformed the way we shop, making it easier than ever to find and purchase products from around the world. With just a few clicks, consumers can compare prices, read reviews, and have items delivered to their doorsteps—often within days.
Online shopping offers several advantages over traditional retail. For one, it is incredibly convenient. Shoppers no longer need to travel to physical stores, park their cars, or wait in long checkout lines. Instead, they can browse and buy products at any time of the day or night, from the comfort of their own homes. This is especially beneficial for people with busy schedules, disabilities, or those living in remote areas.
Another advantage is the wide range of products available online. Unlike brick-and-mortar stores, which are limited by physical space, online retailers can offer thousands of items, including rare or niche products. For example, a small bookstore in a rural town may only stock a few hundred titles, but an online bookstore can provide millions of books from publishers worldwide.
However, online shopping also has its drawbacks. One major concern is security. Shoppers must share sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, which can be vulnerable to hacking or fraud. Additionally, there is a risk of receiving products that do not match their online descriptions—whether due to poor quality, incorrect sizing, or misleading photos. Returns and refunds can also be more complicated than in physical stores, often requiring shipping fees or lengthy processing times.
Despite these challenges, online shopping continues to grow in popularity. In 2024, global e-commerce sales reached over $6 trillion, a 15% increase from the previous year. As technology improves—with better security measures, virtual try-on tools, and faster delivery options—it is likely that online shopping will become an even more integral part of our daily lives.
6. What is the main topic of this passage?
A) The history of online shopping.
B) The advantages and disadvantages of online shopping.
C) How to avoid fraud when shopping online.
D) The future of traditional retail stores.
7. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an advantage of online shopping?
A) Convenience of shopping at any time.
B) Wide range of available products.
C) Ability to try products before buying.
D) No need to travel to physical stores.
8. What is a major security concern for online shoppers?
A) High shipping costs.
B) Slow delivery times.
C) Risk of credit card information being stolen.
D) Difficulty in finding rare products.
9. According to the passage, why might a customer return an online purchase?
A) The product was delivered too quickly.
B) The product did not match the online description.
C) The store was located too far from their home.
D) The price was higher than in a physical store.
10. What was the global e-commerce sales growth in 2024 compared to the previous year?
A) 5%
B) 10%
C) 15%
D) 20%
