Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.

A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times. A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night and Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. This is why writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent co-operation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.

A fire drill is not an idle exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives. Last week’s drill has already shown a number of important points regarding fire precautions in the building. For instance, at two o’clock in the morning, it was very difficult to see signs and directions clearly. It was also clear that residents need to keep hallways and stairways completely clear of belongings.

However, the most important result of the drill was the realization that fire alarms are not enough on their own. Everyone must be familiar with escape routes and must react immediately when the alarm sounds. I would like to remind you again that the main stairway is the primary escape route, and the secondary stairway should be used only if the main one is blocked.

I trust that you will all continue to co-operate fully with these necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety in the building.

  1. What is the main purpose of the note?

C. Signs and directions need to be more visible at night.

D. Residents should practice using secondary escape routes.

  5. According to the note, what is the primary escape route?

A. The emergency exit on the ground floor.

B. The secondary stairway near the elevator.

C. The main stairway in the building.

D. The fire escape ladder outside the window.

Passage Two

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.

In recent years, the concept of “emotional intelligence” (EI) has gained widespread attention in psychology and education. Unlike traditional intelligence quotient (IQ), which measures cognitive abilities like problem-solving and memory, EI refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.

Research suggests that EI plays a crucial role in personal and professional success. A study by psychologists at Harvard University found that individuals with high EI are more likely to build strong relationships, handle stress effectively, and make better decisions. In the workplace, managers with high EI tend to inspire their teams more effectively and resolve conflicts peacefully.

EI can be developed through practice, even in adulthood. Simple strategies include keeping a journal to reflect on daily emotions, practicing active listening in conversations, and learning to pause and respond calmly to stressful situations. Schools are also starting to incorporate EI training into their curricula, with programs that teach students empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation.

Critics argue that EI is too vague to measure and that its importance is overstated. However, most experts agree that while IQ opens doors, EI determines how well we navigate through life. As psychologist Daniel Goleman puts it, “Emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership.”

  6. What is the main topic of the passage?

A. The difference between IQ and EI.

B. The importance and development of emotional intelligence.

C. How to measure emotional intelligence effectively.

D. Criticisms of the concept of emotional intelligence.

  7. According to the passage, EI focuses on ______.

A. cognitive abilities like memory and problem-solving

B. academic performance and test scores

C. understanding and managing emotions in oneself and others

D. physical skills and coordination
